Job Description

  • Position Summary/ Department Summary: Cardiac ICU Child Life Specialist
    • Working 40 hours per week, four 10.5 hour days. Every 6 weeks a full weekend rotation required
    • Participating in therapeutic activities and programs to meet patients' psychosocial and developmental needs, and facilitating adjustment to health care experiences for patients in our CICU
    • Serving as member of multidisciplinary team
    • Joining an eight person team of child life specialists who support patients throughout the Benderson Family Heart Center
    • Providing support to patients and families from birth to young adults in the cardiac population. With a higher number of infant and toddlers, this population includes neonates, post-operative patients, and transplant patients
  • Key Responsibilities:
    • Common interventions include support for procedures, siblings, development, and bereavement
    • Providing coping support for patients with both short and long-term hospitalizations
    • Communicating with cardiac donors and coordinating donations
    • Maintaining resources which include ordering and stocking unit areas
    • Delegating work assignments to volunteers and participates in clinical training of student interns.
  • Minimum Qualifications Education :
    • Bachelor's degree in Child Development, Child Life, or a closely related field with a concentration in child life.
    • 600-hour Child Life internship under the supervision of a certified child life specialist.
    • General skills to resolve problems requiring the use of child development theory, professional child life principles, and experienced‑based knowledge.
    • Well-developed writing skills, and excellent communication skills including conflict resolution to effectively work as a team member.
    • Child Life Certification required within 1 year of hire
