Position Summary :

The Director of Development and Communications is responsible for all fundraising initiatives and activities of the organization. They are directly responsible for the development and implementation of the annual giving plan including cultivating and maintaining relationships with new and existing donors and supporters, developing, and building a Major Gifts Program, researching, writing grant proposals, and providing evaluation reports as required. They also supervise the Development Associate and lead the marketing initiatives for Hospice and Palliative Care of Marthas Vineyard.

As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, the Director of Development and Communications participates in strategic planning and budgeting initiatives. They work within the guidelines, policies and mission of the organization and will be accountable and responsible for specific projects as assigned.

The position also contributes to an ethical, safe, and inclusive environment through knowledge and practice of the organization's policies and procedures.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities :

Strategic Planning



  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and Board of Directors to create and implement the organizations Fundraising and Marketing Plans to increase contributed revenue and support the strategic directions of the organization in accordance with ethical fundraising principles. Monitor, evaluate and adapt all fundraising and communications activities to ensure that goals are being achieved. Build relationships with community stakeholders and individual donors to advance the mission and fundraising goals of the organization. Assume other responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Director

Organize a robust and intentional fundraising program



  • Develop policies and procedures for the department that reflect ethical fundraising practices. Oversee the planning and execution of the annual fundraising plan to include (but not be limited to) the following:



    • Direct Mail


    • Major Gift cultivation and solicitation


    • Grant identification and proposal submissions


    • Special events: Memorial Day Race, Summer Soiree, Golf Classic, Handmade from the Heart and other third-party events.


    • Planned Giving (bequests and trusts)





  • Oversee the administration of a donor mailing list and database in accordance with privacy policies and legislation. Develop and manage timelines for various fundraising activities to ensure strategic plans and critical fundraising processes are carried out in a timely manner. Foster an understanding of philanthropy with the board, staff and volunteers. Cultivate and oversee volunteers to assist with various fundraising activities.

Marketing and Communications



  • Develop, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive marketing/communications plan in alignment with the organizations strategic plan. Liaise with Hospice and Palliative Care of Marthas Vineyard departments to manage marketing of programs and public awareness initiatives. Manage the social media and website activities for the organization. Coordinate the design, printing and distribution of marketing and communications materials. Design and implement external community engagement strategies. Assume leadership of the organizations branding strategy.

Budgeting and Finance



  • Develop and manage an annual income and expenditure budget for the fundraising and communications program. Prepare regular reports on budget progress of the fundraising and communications programs. Monitor and manage expenses and analyze budget reports for fundraising and marketing programs and recommend changes as necessary. Work collaboratively with the office administrator and accounting group to ensure accurate coding of income and expenses, as well as monthly reconciliation of fundraising revenue.

Human Resource Management



  • Direct, plan and coordinate the work of direct reports including supervision and evaluation, training and team building. Assume responsibility for coaching and performance management of direct reports.

Seek out opportunities for financial support through grants and sponsorships. Preserve the organizations reputation with the community at large by acting with a high level of integrity.

Minimum Qualifications :



  • Post-secondary degree: CFRE designation an asset Ten years professional progressive experience in fundraising or similar experience People person: successful record of establishing and growing effective professional relationships with donors, volunteers and co-workers, and high emotional intelligence. Outstanding oral and written communication skills. Excellent computer skills and familiarity with donor database operation. Previous experience and appreciation for working with volunteers. Strong knowledge of the Marthas Vineyard fundraising community. Must be capable of operating: computer, telephone, fax machine, copier, and other general office equipment.
