Description of the Position: (Purpose of the Position):
Research assistants will work closely with faculty member on research for Follow the Breadcrumb Trail: A Cultural History of Touch and Go Records. The project is the follow-up to historian Michael Carriere's and David Schalliol's book, The City Creative: The Rise of Urban Placemaking in Contemporary America. This new project uses the history of Touch and Go Records and its affiliated artists (e.g., Necros, Slint, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and TV on the Radio) to investigate a broader story of U.S. cultures in the late-twentieth/early twenty-first centuries. We particularly emphasize how the "alternafication" of these cultures shaped processes as diverse as urban gentrification and the digital distribution of music. The research assistant's work will be matched to their competencies, but may include searching through zines/alternative newspapers, transcribing interviews, tracking down contact information for interviewees, collecting materials about cultural development in select U.S. cities, and more.

Work hours will be flexible, with an expected opportunity of approximately 100 hours of research relatively evenly distributed over the summer. The general idea will be to aim for 10 hours a week for 10 weeks, but adjustments can be made for vacations and other breaks.
